Our HistoryWhittle Hall Junior Football Club was founded in May 1998 by team managers Peter Guy and Gary McLean.
At the time, they believed that children under the age of 10 were too young to be playing full eleven-a-side football — a view that was later supported by the Football Association. With their players preparing to enter the Under 10 season, they formed Whittle Hall JFC and entered two teams into an alternative league playing seven-a-side football.
That league later joined with the Warrington Junior League, with both competitions coming together under the banner of the Warrington Junior Football League.
Peter Guy was elected as the club’s first Chairman, with Barry Bowers taking on the role of Secretary. From the very beginning, the club’s main focus was to provide children with the opportunity to play football in the right spirit.
The standards set by those first teams were clear. The original group of players did not receive a single caution until they reached Under 15 level — and even then, there was only one throughout the entire season.
Our aim was, and remains, to provide football wherever possible for young people, regardless of their ethnicity, background or ability.
Another founding member, Steve Pennington, played an important role in driving the club’s early growth and expansion.
In September 1999, the club formed an Under 8 team. The majority of those players remained with Whittle Hall until they had completed their Under 16 season.
The 2003 group included five girls, with the last of them remaining at the club until May 2009, when she moved on to play for an all-girls team in Runcorn.
The club continued to grow:
They have given up their time not only on matchdays, but also during training sessions, club activities and in all kinds of weather. Their reward has always been the same: seeing children of all ages enjoying football, developing their skills and being part of a team.
Whittle Hall JFC would not be where it is today without them.
To every volunteer, coach, parent and supporter who has contributed to the club’s journey — thank you.
